Landscapes and Still life
For me landscape is a record of emotion, lived experience or sense of place.
I like long walks in countryside with the vast, unpredictable terrain, grand scale, wide horizons, and complex natural geological textures. A sketchbook and pastels are my tools to "snapshot" a view, or light, or colour. But unlike a static photo, a drawing synthesises all the shifting moments of moving clouds, and shadows into a single, living image that carries the energy of direct response to the observed.
Some of live outdoor sketches are translated into oils in the studio with often redefined composition, cropping and details in order to find an emotional anchor of the entire scene.
